Never Hide Again - Page 88

Chapter 42

Two Weeks Later

My back teeth are grinding so hard I’m surprised nothing has cracked yet. It could be nerves as information about Lonnie remains nil, or it could be the fact that I’ve called Grant’s phone now about ten times and it goes to voicemail every time.

Normally, I wouldn’t worry, but he should have been home two hours ago. I skipped work today since the first day of my period always makes me feel like shit.

I go back and check our text thread, and Grant’s last message does nothing to lessen the pinching feeling threading through my ribs.

I’ll be home soon. Miss you.

What if something happened to him? What if Lonnie—

“No,” I bark at myself. That’s not what happened … I swear to God if Grant isn’t okay because Lonnie decided to make another attempt, I’ll cry until I’m numb and then I’ll blast Lonnie straight to hell. And I won’t stop until I find him.

For now, though, I try Grant’s cell once more.

Relived air snags in my chest when it clicks on. “Grant?”

My brows furrow when I hear nothing at first. Then I smile when I hear Grant’s voice muffled in the background. But he never answers me.

“Grant?”

I hear another voice. A woman’s voice—light, airy, and defined. She’s laughing in the background.

My stomach takes a sharp nosedive straight to the ground. “Grant?”

Then the line is dead.
