Boss of Mine - Page 16

I pull open the door to the office and flip on the light. It's quiet. Really quiet. I don't mind, though, I do my best work in complete silence. The door clicks closed behind me as I start to move through the empty office.

Yesterday was a bust. I didn't get shit done because I couldn't think straight. Ronda was on my brain all damn day. I even crept out early to try and clear my head. There was no point in staying if I couldn't get a single thing done.

So, here I am. I came in early this morning, hopeful to catch up on a few things, and maybe get ahead of myself just in case my head becomes clouded in a fog again.

Tink, clank. A noise from the kitchen catches my attention. I stop short and see the light is on inside. No one should be here yet. The cleaning crew comes in during the night and are gone long before anyone else arrives. Everyone else won't be here until close to nine, almost an hour and a half from now.

I take slow steps to the office kitchen, and quietly push open the door. To my surprise, Ronda is at the microwave making a coffee. I lean against the door frame, folding my arms over my chest as I watch her.

She's bopping her head to some tune I can't hear because she has earbuds in her ears. Her hips are swaying to the beat, her hands are dancing in the air, and her lips are moving silently to the lyrics.

“Oh!” she calls out as she spins around and sees me standing there. She pulls the earbuds from her ears and lays her hand on her chest. “You scared me. I didn't know you were there.”

“I know, you were too busy with your music.” She looks down at her phone and earbuds and smiles. “What are you listening to anyway?” I ask as I walk to the table. She passes me one of the earbuds and hits play. “Who is this? I really like it.”

“Jimmy Reed.”

“I like it,” I say again as we both stand side by side, swaying to the soulful beat.

We stay like this for the rest of the song. I pull the earpiece out, and she tucks her phone into her purse.

“So,” I say, “what are you doing here so early this morning? You know I'm not paying overtime, right?” I ask jokingly.

She laughs softly and says, “I had trouble sleeping, and figured I might as well come in early since I was la—” She cuts herself off, looking up at me. “Since I had some work left from yesterday to finish.”

I eye her curiously. She was late yesterday, I know, but her cautious nature is questioning if I know it too. She isn't sure, so she's playing it safe.

“You were late yesterday.”

“So, you did know?”

“It's my company, it's kind of my job to know everything.” I give her a smile.

“How come you didn't say anything if you knew?” she asks as she blows cool air over her coffee.

“I had other things on my mind.” I let my eyes ride up and down her body. “I'm sure you didn't forget. I know I didn't.”

She smiles back shyly, dropping her eyes to her cup of coffee. “Why are you here so early?”

“Because I have work to get done too. I couldn't think straight at all yesterday.” I take a step closer to her and run my fingers down the outside of her arm. “There was something else I wanted, and I just couldn't focus on anything else.”

She inhales a sharp breath as a visible shiver runs through her body. “Do you feel better this morning?” she asks, her words all breathy as she lifts her hand to her neck and rubs it softly.

“No,” I say. My voice is firm and powerful. I don't feel better. I still feel this desire, this insatiable need to take this woman. To make her scream my name. To feel every inch of her body. One night isn't enough to shut down what I feel inside.

Ronda's eyes jump up to mine. She bites her bottom lip, gently tugging it into her mouth. I swallow hard, and her eyes follow my Adam's apple as it bobs in my throat.

I'm about to speak, when she stops me with a kiss, crushing her lips against mine. I'm taken by surprise, but I don't resist her, I embrace her. I scoop both hands around her face, kissing her back. She exhales into our kiss, her tongue spearing inside my mouth like a lioness who found her prey.

Our kiss turns from testing to devouring almost instantly. With broad steps, I walk her back until she hits the counter. Our lips never stop touching, our tongues never stop dancing.

She coos as I lick across the ridges of her mouth and swirl my tongue around hers. Her hands find my hair, raking over my scalp, and tearing at the roots. They keep grabbing and tugging, her nails dragging down and then back up.
