Blaze (Steel Brothers Saga 21) - Page 41

“Actually, it’s not.”

Relief surges through me. “Thank God. So his confession is still there?”

“Not exactly. Everything is still there…up to the point where he confessed. So basically, it just makes me look bad.”

That relief I just felt? It’s morphed into full-fledged panic.

“He turned it against us, Cal. He made it into something that harms us instead of helps us.”

“Damn it. Thank God we at least listened to it before we started trying to negotiate with him.”

She sighs. “Yeah. I wanted to wait for you, but I couldn’t. I had to know.”

“Donny and I were talking, and he actually came up with the idea that it might be a fake. I mean, the dude stole our key. I’m not sure why we didn’t think of it in the first place.” I rub at my now throbbing temples. “Except I do know why. We were both so relieved that it was still there.”

“I know. We need to keep our emotions at bay through this and focus on facts and logic. And before you say it, yes, I know I sound just like you. How did he get into the safe-deposit box to make the switch? He would have needed to show ID that he was me.”

“Easy enough. He took a woman with him who had a fake ID.”

“So someone is out there masquerading as me.”

“Probably not. Probably just for that particular thing.”

“So? I don’t fucking care. Someone’s got my name and social security number and used it to fabricate an ID.”

“Have you noticed any weird charges on your credit cards or anything?”

“No, but I haven’t exactly been looking.”

“Fire up your computer right now, while we’re on the phone. Tell me if anything looks amiss.”

“Yeah, okay. Where are you anyway?”

“I’m in Grand Junction with Donny.”

“Will you be back tonight?”

I look down at the ruffled bed. “Probably not. Honestly, I don’t know.”

It could go either way. Though since Donny’s dad just got home, he’ll probably want to be home in the morning.

“Nothing wrong on my Visa so far,” Rory says. “I recognize all the charges. Let me look at my checking and savings accounts.” She taps furiously on her keys, so loud that I can hear it over the phone. “Thank God.” She heaves a sigh so loud I’m almost sure I can feel it through the phone. “Nothing seems out of the ordinary.”

“Just in case, you should probably get some identity theft protection right now. Someone obviously has your information.”

“I beat you to it, sis,” she says. “I’m already checking out the Norton website.”

“I’ll do the same once I get home,” I say.

“Good idea.”

“Rory… I told Donny. I told him everything.”

My sister is silent for a moment. Then, “Okay.”

“He doesn’t blame us. For anything. He was a little upset when he first found out we kept the information from him about who poisoned Diana, but he understood when I explained the whole thing.”

“You’ve got a great guy there, Callie. Don’t screw it up.”
