Glimmer (Glimmer and Glow 1) - Page 79

Dylan glanced over at her as he unfastened his seat belt and did a double take. He went still. Alice was already feeling like a cake left out in the scalding sun, her perspiration just drying from her first riding lesson and intense, raunchy sex. Dylan’s slow smile made her melt even more, especially when he reached out and smoothed her short hair behind her ears and skimmed his fingertip gently across her flushed cheek.

“Are you blushing or is this from before?” he murmured, referring to their heated trysts at the stables.

“It’s from before, I guess.”

She noticed his arched brows and silent query. He knew she wasn’t being entirely honest. “It’s just … isn’t it kind of unusual, for an innkeeper to agree to let us use the facilities to shower and change before dinner?”

“No,” he said without pause. “I’m paying for two rooms for the entire night.”

“But we’re not going to actually sleep here?” Alice asked, confused.

“I’d rather we slept at home tonight. I don’t want to waste part of your day off driving around.”

Alice’s mouth fell open. His matter-of-fact statement flustered and pleased her.

“What’s really wrong?” he asked, his fingertip trailing along her neck, making her skin prickle in awareness. “Alice?” he prompted when she hesitated.

“Do you do this a lot?” she couldn’t stop herself from asking, no matter how hard she tried. “Bring women here? I mean … it’s very romantic, isn’t it?” He blinked, his caressing finger stilling. She glanced uneasily out the window, feeling undone for some reason as she stared at the idyllic setting of the lovely country inn perched on the white dune and the sun setting in the sea-like lake behind it.

She swallowed thickly, realizing how stupid she sounded. “Never mind, it doesn’t matter,” she said gruffly, turning to open her car door. He halted her by grasping her shoulder. She turned to him uneasily.

“Are you asking me if you’re like other women I’ve been with? Is that what you want to know?”

She swallowed thickly. Yes, that’s what she meant. But it felt unbearable in that moment, to want that answer so much. So needy and pitiful. She ducked her head to hide her shame, but Dylan caught her chin. Gently, he urged her to look at him.

She could have brushed him off and gotten out of the door. She wanted to do that, very much.

Unfortunately, she wanted something else more.

One look into his dark lustrous eyes and his starkly handsome face, and she couldn’t look away.

“You must realize you’re special. Don’t you?” he asked quietly.

“I’m not special,” fell past her lips before she could censor herself. “That’s why I can’t figure out why … any of this … why you—”

Her blundering came to a halt when he leaned forward and kissed her, firm and questing, a simmering, unhurried seduction. A charge tingled through her, and she opened her mouth to increase their contact. Their lips nibbled and molded and slid together in sublime carnality.

“That’s why,” he said huskily against her lips a moment later. “Because of that.”

Dylan’s kisses scrambled her brain. It took her a moment for her to piece the topic together again. “Because of sex? Because we’re so attracted to each other?”

He put his hand at her nape and pushed her forward slightly so that their foreheads touched. His low mirthless laugh made goose bumps rise beneath his warm hand at her neck.

“Is that all you felt in that kiss?” he demanded.

She pushed her head back, wild to read his expression. He’d sobered. He looked fierce, but she couldn’t interpret why exactly. It took her a moment to realize he was waiting for her answer.

“I don’t know,” she admitted, cornered into honesty. “I mean … It was … I’ve never had anything like this happen before.”

“Neither have I.”

“Oh,” she muttered tremulously, warmth rushing through her.

His hand moved on her neck, his fingertips caressing her. “Let’s just say this for now: I haven’t had a peaceful, complete night’s rest since I knew of your existence.” Her cheeks turned hotter … if that was possible. “And as far as your original question?”

She met his stare with wary hopefulness.

“I knew about Deanna and her husband opening this inn for years. This is the first time I’ve been here, though. I’m glad you think it’s a romantic spot, because I don’t usually do romance, Alice. At least not with any degree of expertise,” he added dryly.
